There’s only morning now.
Until mid-September it will be
the only functional time of day.
To water, walk, cook
do laundry, be outside.
After that I tuck inside,
windows and shades closed,
first on the east side of the house
and then the west.
I’ve tried leaving one or two windows
open just to hear the birds,
to feel part of life. But it was too hot.
So I have begun the summer hibernation,
quite the opposite of what I think summer
should be, quite unlike the ads on t.v.
I sit outside in morning
soaking up the sounds
to sustain me through the silence
I will live in all day.
