2006/laundry

Monday morning
laundry is already
drying.
A proud tradition,
at least an old
one.
I remember a
woman I met
when women’s
group’s were what
we had to do.
A decade or more
older than I was,
divorced I think,
as everyone was
then.
“I’ve been through
all this,” she said
only to realize
on Monday’s
I do the wash.”
Said not as a statement
of a lesson she
had learned,
but finding herself
back in the same
old place, or an
altered version
of it.
I don’t know if,
like T. S., she saw
it for the first
time
or not.
I didn’t know
to look for that,
I guess.
But I’ve never
forgotten her
words,
nor the way
she said them.
